Hiding WhatsApp Last Seen Timestamp **UPDATE 11**

WhatsApp has got to be one of our favourite and most used app. However, we get this question all the time – how do I hide my WhatsApp Last Seen Timestamp? Surprisingly, this is of concern to a lot of people for privacy reasons. There was not official way of disabling it and showing your last online time became a necessary evil of using Whatsapp.

Well finally there is a way! The latest version of WhatsApp 2.8.1 gives you the power to control this setting. All you need to do is go to Setting>Chat settings>Advanced and switch Last Seen Timestamp to OFF and you’re done. It takes up to 24 hours for last seen change to take effect apparently, and you can only toggle once in a 24 hour timeframe. We haven’t tested this yet so please let us know if the 24 hour limit is really a hard limit!

This update is free of charge and is available in the AppStore.

EDIT – Seems like a lot of people have the settings confused so here are some screen shots to clarify. Note that this is a from an iPhone 4S using version 2.8.3:

EDIT2 – We have just tested this with a Samsung Galaxy S3 using Whatsapp version 2.8.1504. Contrary to what some Android users have told us, we can confirm that the ‘Last Seen Timestamp’ toggle DOES NOT currently exist in the Android version. Hopefully a future update will include this much needed feature for the Android users. In the meantime, if anyone has any news or further workarounds please keep them coming!

EDIT3 – If Blackberry users can also confirm this setting that would be great!

EDIT4 – We have done even more testing and it seems the Android Whatsapp version 2.8.1504 behaviour is actually different to the iPhone. Even though the Android version does not have the ‘Last Seen Timestamp’ toggle, it behaves similar to an iPhone with the setting turned off! It will show if a user is online and it will show the Last Seen Timestamp momentarily when the user goes offline, but after approximately 3-5 mins (the actual time varies for some reason) the Last Seen Timestamp disappears completely. This behaviour is consistent across other Android phones or the iPhone.

In summary, we understand the behaviour to be 1 of the following 5 conditions:
1. Two Android users will not see each other’s Last Seen Timestamp after several minutes of exiting Whatsapp, the Timestamp will be blank.
2. An Android user will not see an iPhone user’s Last Seen Timestamp after several minutes of exiting Whatsapp, and vice versa, the Timestamp will be blank.
3. Two iPhone users with their Last Seen Timestamp turned OFF will not see each other’s Last Seen Timestamp after several minutes of exiting Whatsapp, the Timestamp will be blank.
4. An iPhone user with their Last Seen Timestamp turned OFF messaging another iPhone user with their Last Seen Timestamp turned ON will not see each other’s Last Seen Timestamp after several minutes of exiting Whatsapp, the Timestamp will be blank.
5. Two iPhone users with their Last Seen Timestamp turned ON will always see each other’s Last Seen Timestamp.

EDIT5 01/10/2012 – There has been a number of reports from numerous users in the last several hours saying that their Last Seen Timestamp behaviour has changed without them doing anything. For most users, the Last Seen Timestamp has disappear all together even though they have not changed the Last Seen Timestamp toggle. For other, random and incorrect Last Seen Timestamps are showing for certain contacts. We confirm these reports are consistent with the behaviour on all the test devices we have. This suggests that something has changed on the WhatsApp server side. As far as we know, this ‘bug’ is affecting all WhatsApp users on all platforms, (including Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows 8 etc) and all handset manufacturers (including Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, Blackberry, Nokia etc). We are hoping this is a temporary issue and not an intentional change from WhatsApp. We are investigating this and will give you an update as soon as we have more information.

EDIT6 01/10/20 – WhatsApp seems to have fixed the bug which prevented all users from seeing the Last Seen Timestamp after close to 20 hours of outage. Please continue to report any abnormalities if you notice anything.

EDIT7 01/10/2012 – The Last Seen Timestamp is back for most people but there are still report of inaccuracies in the time for some (not all). Please let us know your findings so we can more accurately pinpoint the issue.

EDIT8 20/11/2012 – Last few days there have been reports of incorrect Last Seen Timestamps, especially when contacts leave Whatsapp for more than 30 mins. Whatsapp seems to be reverting to previous Last Seen Timestamps. For example, you have a conversation with Mary in the morning and the Last Seen Timestamp for Mary is 6:08am. Later that afternoon you continue to chat to Mary and the Last Seen Timestamp is correct and up to date all afternoon. Mary goes into a meeting for 2 hours and suddenly the Last Seen Timestamp reverts back to 6:08am. This is a current bug with Whatsapp servers and affects all platforms and devices.

EDIT9 21/11/2012 – As of this morning reports from users are that the Last Seen Timestamp is back to normal. If it still isn’t working for you still please let us know so we can look into it further! (Apparently, this issue is still affect a limited number of users as of 2:00pm GMT +10)

EDIT10 15/12/2012 – Still no Last Seen Timestamp toggle on the latest version of WhatsApp 2.8.7345 on Blackberry devices. iOS is still the only platform with the toggle.

EDIT11 16/12/2012 – There have been numerous reports from Android and Blackberry users that the Last Seen Timestamp is not working as of last night. No reports from iOS users though.  iPhone users have also reported this problem so it is at least affect some iPhone users. If this is affecting you please leave a message so we can help.

  1. Hi,

Would like to check with you. Does it mean that if i turn off the Last Seen Timestamp, my contacts wont be able to see my last seen timestamp? Or it’s just me not being able to see their last seen timestamp.

    • Hi Dave,

It works both ways, you cannot see your friends last online time and they cannot see yours. However, when you are online it will show that you are online. As soon as you leave whatsapp, the last seen online time will not be displayed and there will be nothing under your name. In other words, if a friend clicks onto your name in their whatsapp, and you are not online, they will see nothing under your username. Hope that helps :)

      • Sorry but it doesn’t work.
I turned the last seen timestamp off on last Thursday and the day after turned on again but it didn’t work again. I can’t see anybody’s last timestamp and they can’t see mine either.

Today I turned off again in order to try again on tomorrow in order to re-try if this time it would work!

Please find this app a better solution.

Are you certain the toggle is set to ON? My experience is if the 24 hours is not up it won’t let you switch back to ON and will give you a warning. Once 24 hours is up you can toggle it back ON and the timestamp appears straight away.

        • Hi Sarah,

Sorry to hear that, but as far as we know once you switch your timestamp off, you really should wait the ffull 24 hours. Uninstalling and reinstalling usually causes more problems.

Did you do a backup of your phone prior to uninstalling WhatsApp? If you did, a restore might be the only way to get your chats back…

Besides that there’s not much you can do unfortunately…

          Best of luck.

  2. Hi

I tried it “off” but found it is not a good for me and I just simply turn it “on” within 24 hours… but why it is not showing normally even it has been passed 36 hours already… I just wonder if I should anyways turn it now to “off” and after 24 hours, I again to trun it “on” accordingly that would be fine?

Alternative, any other ways for me to show it back, ie I want to show the timestamp for myself and others.. :)

    Thanks!

    • Hi Katy,

In my experience if you try to turn it back ON within 24 hours it actually won’t let you and will give you a warning – This functionality can only be toggled at most once every 24 hours. Once 24 hours has passed you should be able to toggle it again and the effect should be instant. Make sure you haven’t confused the chat settings>advanced setting>last seen timestamp with chat settings>message timestamp, this confused me the first time when I tried to toggle it back.

Using the toggle is the only way I know how to show the timestamp again unfortunately…

I will play with my on/off settings over the next few days to test and I will report back (it will take 48 hours at least!). Let us know if you are able to get it working again too.

    • Hi Katy,

I have turned the last seen timestamp toggle on and off twice now and it seems to work correctly. As soon as the toggle is switched ON the timestamp reappears on my phone and for others straight away, and vice versa. I did have to wait the full 24 hours before it allowed me to toggle it though. And it was quite exact too, I tried it at various times before the 24 hours was up and it wouldn’t let me toggle. Hope this helps :)

  3. Hi.
If im going to off my last seen timestamp now, for the first time. It will off it instantly right? I do not hav to wait 24 hrs, right?
I understand once I off it now, I hav to wait 24 hrs to on it back again.
What if this is my first time offing it?
    Thanks.

    • Hi Rachel,

Yes, once you turn off the “last seen timestamp” the effect is instant. To turn it back on you have to wait 24 hours. It does not matter how many times you do it, I have successfully tried 5 times toggling on and off. The only catch is waiting 24 hours before turning it back on. Hope this helps.

    • kenzy
    • Reply
    • Hi Kenzy,

That is exactly what the last seen timestamp setting is for, if you don’t want you contacts to know when you are online, you can simply turn it off.

I think some people might be confusing MESSAGE TIMESTAMP with LAST SEEN TIMESTAMP.

MESSAGE TIMESTAMP toggle displays the date and time of each individual message.

LAST SEEN TIMESTAMP toggle shows when you were last online to your friends and also shows when your friends were last online. If you turn this setting off your friends won’t know when you were last online but you also won’t know when they were last online. Your friends WILL still know you are online if you are typing a message or you are in the app. Your status will be displayed as ONLINE. As soon as you leave the app though, as LAST SEEN TIMESTAMP is turned off, nothing will be displayed under your name and your friends will not know when you were last online.

MESSAGE TIMESTAMP is found under settings>chat settings>message timestamp. This is NOT what you want to change. The LAST SEEN TIMESTAMP setting is found under settings>chat settings>advanced>last seen timestamp.

Hope this is clear for everyone :)

Go back into the setting to make sure that the last seen timestamp is in fact on. You will get a warning if it is less than 24 hours. Once it is over 24 hours it should work straight away!

  6. So i was just wondering, If you turn your timestamp off, you cant see your contacts’ timestamp as well? As in if i were to turn it off, and then click on a friend, there will be no last seen under their name?
If this is so, then whats the point of that? I thought turning off the timestamp was for just you and not your contacts as well.

  12. I turned Last Seen Off, but I wish to reset it ASAP. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Whatsapp again and under the advanced setting tab, it will auto switch the Last Seen to ON when I re-install. However, it is still in the OFF mode where I can’t see people’s last seen time.

If this is the case, after 24 hours, will it auto recover to show people’s last seen time since it is already ON automatically now and I need not toggle it ON again after 24 hours?

    • Hi Alice,

Last Seen Timestamp is a server side setting and unistalling the app may give you the ability to toggle it ON but the restriction on the server side will probably still remain. Just to be safe I would probably switch it OFF again and wait 24 hours and switch it back ON. Let us know how you go.

As I understand it whatsapp’s Last Seen Timestamp will register as soon as you go into the app. You will appear ONLINE even if you don’t message anyone. And when you exit the app that is when you were last seen online, hence Last Seen Timestamp. So you probably are being paranoid and I’m sure your husband loves you :)

  16. Hello everyone! Just a tip about the 24 hour waiting period, there is a very simple way to bybass it.
If you turned the Last Seen Timestamp OFF, but want it back on again immediately, after 5mins or whenever before the 24hours have passed, simply go to settings>general>date and time and change the date to “tomorrow” or the next day. Then save it, go back to Whatsapp and turn the Last Seen Timestamp switch back to ON. Then just change the sate again to the correct day. I have tested it many times and it works perfectly.
    Hope it helps :)

  27. So when they send me messages will they see that i received it? Or that influences the “last seen” setting only? For example, they send me a message and it shows them 1 tick. When i go on and receive the message will it show them 2 ticks? Or will only go to 2 ticks when i reply them?

As far as we understand it, the message status – one tick (sent), double tick (read) and clock (sending) icons are not influenced by the last seen timestamp.

      • It’s a bit a waste of time then isn’t it? The other users will still know that you went on and you didn’t reply. They simply wont know when! :P
I’ve tested it with a friend today and it still shows when you are online too. And sometimes when you leave the chat window open you are able to see the “last seen” time-stamp. So it’s not fully working!
I believe this option is very tricky. For those who are planning to use it to hide from other users be aware of it si you wont have problems! :P

        • Hi Andreas,

If the intent is to conceal the fact that you have read a message, you could simply turn on Notification Services for Whatsapp and it will show new messages in your home screen without opening the app itself. This way you will not have the double tick against a read message. Does that help?

When you say it is ‘not fully working’ can you please explain what settings you had and what handset you and your friend are using?

  28. Yes i am aware of “Notification Services”. But at some point you have to reply so you have no choice than to go on. Or there is a way to avoid that too?

I’m using iphone, my friend has android and i just set the last seen time-stamp off. Every time i went on it was showing him that i was online. Most of the times as soon as i went off it disappeared and it was empty. But sometimes, the last seen appeared for a few secs & disappeared afterwards. But for this to happen you need to keep the chat window open.

    • Hi Andreas,

As far as I am aware, if you go into Whatsapp and reply to John’s messages and then leave the app only John’s messages will have a double tick. In any other chat window unread messages will still be marked sent but unread (single tick). So in other words you’ve read the message using ‘Notification Services’ but the other person is not aware you have read it and cannot see when you were last online, assuming of course your ‘Last Seen Timestamp’ is turned off. Unless they happen to be online around the same time that you are in the app and actually see your status as online or having just gone offline. Does this make sense?

      Cheers,

      • Ok i will try to check that better. Thanks for the help. :) One last thing, now that the last seen can be disabled that means there is no good way to find out if you are blocked by a user isn’t it?

        • Hi Andreas,

You are right, if a contact’s Last Seen Timstamp is disabled it is harder to tell if they have blocked you. What you could do though is delete the chat altogether and then look at the person’s contact again, if a Last Seen Timestamp appears then it means they have not disable Last Seen Timestamp but has blocked you. This is not 100% but it might give you a bit more information. Hope that helps! :)

          Cheers,

  29. I am what’s app messaging from an iPhone to android user(HTC) and have a conversation thread running… When the android user responds to my messages their last seen time stamp does not match the time they sent the message….but an earlier time and date???? Why is this?

    • Hi Sandra,

Let me see if I understand correctly. Do you mean the Message Timestamps have a later time than the Last Seen Timestamp? For instance, the Message Timestamp is 19:45 and the Last Seen Timestamp is 19:35? What is the typical time difference between the two? Can you also confirm that the system time on both phones are in fact correct (or on automatic)? Are you both in the same time zone/locale?

  30. Yes… The message stamp showed 13.05, yet the last seen timestamp showed 09.35hrs??? So I don’t think it’s anything to do with the time settings as they are almost 4 hours out! And never had this problem with this or any other contact before.
    Thanks

      Are you using a 4S?
What version of iOS are you using?
And did you update to the latest Whatsapp version 2.8.4 or is it an earlier version?
What HTC model is your friend using?
What version of Whatsapp are they on?

    • Hello Sandra,

We highly suspect this bug is related to a time or locale settings on the phone.

You previously said that your phone time is now set to automatic, which syncs with the carrier’s time.

Is your friend’s HTC also set to automatic? Is he in the same time zone? Same geographic location?

Once we know have all this information we will try to get our hands on a HTC Desire to replicate the issue.

    • Hi Jenn,

What you could try is adjusting your system time to more than 24 hours ahead and re-enable the Last Seen Timestamp. This has worked for some people but we are not sure if it works universally. Please share if this works for you.

And your contacts won’t think you deleted them, they just won’t see your Last Seen Timestamp, they will still see your status as ONLINE when you are inside Whatsapp. So don’t worry ;)

      Good luck!

Even though we’re not affiliated with Whatsapp we’ll do what we can to help!

Did you change the time setting as suggested yesterday? If you didn’t and it is now over 24 hours you can simple toggle the Last Seen Timestamp setting back to ON. If it is under 24 hours it won’t let you toggle it so it has to be over 24 hours for it to work. Once the toggle is back to ON it should work again straight away and you should be able to see your contact’s Last Seen Timestamp and vice versa.

          Hope it helps!

Please refer to EDIT 5 in the original post.

WhatsApp servers have changed this behaviour for EVERYONE. There is NOTHING you can do to ‘fix’ it from your handset as it a WhatsApp server setting.

This affects every platform (iOS, Android, Blackberry, Nokia etc) and every phone manufacturer (Apple, HTC, Samsung, LG, Blackberry etc etc). Stay tuned for more information.

No, it’s not just you! Everyone using WhatsApp is affected by this issue at the moment so please be patient and hopefully WhatsApp can get their act together and fix the issue ASAP. We are assuming that this is a temporary issue and not a deliberate decision by WhatsApp to sneak up on its users and remove the ‘Last Seen Timestamp’ without warning. As far as we know this issue started at around 10am Australian Eastern Standard Time (GMT +10) 29.09.2012.

          • Hi Jennifer,

All Last Seen Timestamps are in your local time, you will need to manually calculate what the time is in other timezones. You can simply google ‘Time in Melbourne’ for example. It will tell you that it is 5:37am. We work round the clock here at emagin8 :)

If this issue started occurring in the last 24 hours then it is probably the WhatsApp Last Seen Timestamp bug that is affecting everyone at the moment. If it was before that then we can look closer at this issue once the current bug is fixed, as it is impossible to do any testing at the moment unfortunately.

As far as we know the Last Seen Timestamp toggle requires at least 24 hours to turn on again. Any less and it will not work. This has been tested numerous times. As for the time changing trick that has not been thoroughly tested by us and we cannot confirm the outcome for individual situations. If you are no longer affected by the WhatsApp bug like others still are, then the toggle will come back and the behavior should be back to normal again. Hope this helps. And please share the outcome with us!

          • Hi Charlotte,

Say it was Sunday 2012.09.30 14:00 when you first toggled the Last Seen Timestamp toggle. Realising you can’t toggle it back straight away, you set the time to Monday 2012.10.01 16:00 and tried to toggle the switch back. Did it allow you to toggle at this point? Were you able to toggle but it just didn’t give you the Timestamp back?

            OR

Did it simple say you can’t toggle as 24 hours was not up. And you just switched back to the correct time?

Come the real Monday 2012.10.01 14:00, or 24 hours after you first toggle the Last Seen Timestamp toggle, is it still not letting you toggle it back to ON?

Has it been 24 hours since the fake time Monday 2012.10.01 16:00 lapsed? i.e. Tuesday 2012.10.02 16:00?

I would suggest reinstalling the application if you haven’t done so already. But still very interested in answers to the above questions as this is something we haven’t come across before.

If its not supposed to work like that anymore than would you please let me know. We used to just open the app as a way of saying hi when you can’t text – like during class etc. Now I can’t see that they opened their app a half an hour ago etc. I preferred this app because of that feature (and a few other reasons of course) but now I might have to look for a new app. If its something being worked on then I’ll wait. We get what you are saying. And we are just speculating, but our guess is if the Last Seen Timestamp was OFF by default and was an optional setting, very few people would toggle it ON. After all, why would anyone give up a little bit of their privacy if they get nothing in return? It is the privacy model that Facebook was built on. Extroverts will share regardless, introverts just like to watch, most people fall somewhere in the middle and want the system to be somewhat fair. But we could be wrong :)

    • Hi Anna,

This has been a common issue with the WhatsApp Last Seen Timestamp bug that occured on Sunday. Last Seen Timestamps have been out of whack, incorrect and displaying intermittently. The issue is fixed for most users. It is possible that it still affects a small percentage of users though. You could try reinstalling the app which has worked for some. But other than that there is not much you can do but wait.

After Changing the toggle and trying to change the clock to 24 hours ahead it still did not let me amend. It was still advising that I had to wait 24 hours even tho I had set my clock to a day ahead.
Once 24 hours ahead of fake time I tried this procedure again and it was working again so finally resolved.
Although it looks as though this is an ongoing problem as my last seen timestamp has disappeared again as of around half an hour ago. Is there another bug?

Thanks for the feedback. That confirms the change time trick did not work for you which is interesting. In our tests it actually worked. To then calculate the 24 hours ahead of the fake time you set before it would let you toggle again is even more interesting. Which version are you using again?

And with regard to your latest problem. Do you mean that once 24 hours had passed after the fake time and you could toggle the Last Seen Timestamp back to ON, the Last Seen Timestamp actually worked for a while, but has stopped working again without you doing anything?

Was the Last Seen Timestamp working before you installed 2.8.4? On an iPhone I assume?

      Reinstalling won’t hurt either way.

    • Hi hasina,

Did your Last Seen Timestamp start disappearing since Sunday? That’s when the WhatsApp bug surfaced and is still lingering for some people. Reinstalling would definitely help.

If you Last Seen Timestamp stopped working when you upgraded from 2.8.3 to 2.8.4, then that is a different issue.

Yes, if you turn off your Last Seen Timestamp you will have to wait 24 hours before you can turn it on again. It doesn’t matter if you reinstall WhatsApp or not, the limit still applies.

Might be paranoid but he said he merely turned on and defininately not apped anybody. Help clear this argument up please.” – dear admin, im having the same problem too. my husband works overseas, once, we said ‘goodnight’ and he said he didnt wake through the night. however his whatsapp timestamp stated he was active about 2 hours after we stopped whatsapping. I confronted him directly and he insisted the timestamp is wrong, and is not reliable. According to him he slept through the night and didnt even TOUCH the phone, unlike this other lady’s husband who did turn on the phone.

my qns – is it possible?? that we bade farewell at 9pm, he went into deep sleep and yet whatsapp glitched and showed he was active at 11pm… is it possible?
Sorry to have to bother Admin on this but… he is about 8 hours flight from me and I really dont like the skanky air stewardesss he works with.

        • Hi Julianne,

In my experience WhatsApp does occasionally report the Last Seen Timestamp incorrectly and the recent bugs have made this worse. It is difficult to say if a glitch is possible in this instance without knowing about the history of the devices, make, versions etc. There are rarely once off or occasional glitches reported on this forum. But at the same time these once off or occasional glitches would simply not be reported as they would be written off as being insignificant. If I were in your shoes I would give hubby the benefit of the doubt. There is nothing worse than being 8 hours apart already, having a fight over something that is circumstantial at best is probably not worth it and does more damage to the relationship then good. Settling trust issues through communication rather than WhatsApp has always worked better for me ;)

Sorry for giving relationship advice here, hope I’ve been of some help, good luck! :p

I use HTC incredible S. Timestamp setting does not feature
On my fone either… Its very irritating. There is absolutely no privacy.

Why is whatsapp biased towards android users? :(

Also whatsapp does not have a feature of “add” or “delete” contacts.
It automatically adds them, and to delete the contact from whatsapp, i have to either delete the contact from my phone book or block the
    Contact.

    • Reply
    • Hi shruti,

We agree that WhatsApp is not entirely fair towards Android users as this feature doesn’t exist on the Android platform. However, iOS vs Android development can be very different and features do not always port across correctly. Hopefully it is just a matter of time and the feature will be added in later versions.

With regard to deleting contacts, you could simply delete the conversation and that particular contact will no longer appear in your list of chats. Not sure if that’s what you mean though.

      1. That person might have their Last Seen Timestamp turned off. Which means you cannot see when they were last seen and vice versa. It is of course also possible they blocked you ;)

      2. The Last Seen Timestamp is usually an actual time, like ‘last seen today at 5:55PM’. What version of WhatsApp and what handset are you using?

I’m using version 2.8.4 and using the iPhone 4 handset. If you look at ur chat partners status it will say “Hi there! I am using Whatsapp.” And just underneath this there is another time stamp type of thing that will say something like “7h 38m ago” and I’m presuming the “h” stands for hours and the “m” stands for minutes, but what does this mean exactly? What was 7 hours ago? Could it be the time they last opened the app or checked it? Please help :-)

  83. I have an open conversation with a friend (just the two of us). I often want to know when my friend was last on-line and therefore I often enter in our open conversation to check it (to see my friend’s “last seen” indication). Can my friend somehow find out that I’m entering into our conversation (through my “last seen” indication) or my friend will just be able to see when I was last on-line (through my “last seen” indication) and will not be able to find out whether I was viewing our conversation or I was just in any other conversation that I might also have open in whatsapp? My friend has an Iphone and I’m wondering whether there might be some settings in Iphone that would allow him to see (through my “last seen” indication) if I enter into our open conversation.

Is it possible in an Iphone to set up the LAST SEEN TIMESTAMP toggle or other settings so that the “last seen” indication of me in a conversation between both (my friend and me) will show when I have last entered the conversation that we both have? (this way my friend might be able to know when I last visited the conversation that we both have).

I hope my question is clear.

Many thanks in advance for you reply.

Your friend won’t be able to tell if you have entered into the specific conversation between the two of you, or that you have read your friend’s message. It will only show that you have opened Whatsapp. But one would assume that if you have opened Whatsapp, you would have read all new messages.

      Hope I’ve answered your question!

for example, those who came online in the morning now have their last seen timestamp correctly shown; but those last came online late last night (23:xx) still have the last seen timestamp shown in the afternoon (15:xx). i know it’s not a big deal, but just wonder if that would be fixed.

The current incorrect timestamps will not update until the contact logs in and forces the server to refresh the timestamp. So I guess you will have to wait until these contacts log in…

  100. I just figured out that iphone 4s still publishes the whatsapp timestamp regardless… also the two ticks to show you have actually read the message…Whats App cant be trusted!!

So, i figured a way to do it!!

On the iphone 4s set your notification for Whats app as an Alert –
    Settings-notifications-whats app-notification center (ON) – alert style, Alert…

Double tap the main button and close Whats App.

Now when any one Whats App you, you can read most of the message on your iphone home screen and it will not alert the sender, click – CLOSE_ and the sender will never know!!. Unless of course you go into the message and then you are back into Whats App untrusted mode..

The only Flaw is that eventually when your read the message in Whats App it will then show the time you read it!

I am aware that this is inconvenient, but it has worked for me….

    Hope this helps

Cant see any last seen time stamps now. Someone comes online and it displays the person online, then displays the last seen time stamp for a few minutes then it disappears. Is this a permanent solution to the last seen toggle? Weird cause I didn’t change anything on my phone just woke up and it was like that. I have Samsung GT-s5830i anyone know if this is a bug or a change made? Other than that everything with the app works as usual.

Definitely affection iPhone as well!! if by chance you click on the friends chat and they are online at the same time, it will show they are online, and if they exit the chat while you are still in their window..you’ll see “last seen”, but if you leave the app (not shut it down) and go back to their chat, you can not see ‘last seen” at all. This is truly a big pain!

Generally, WhatsApp will not allow you to switch the Last Seen Timestamp toggle back to ON unless 24 hours has past. If it allows you to switch the setting back to ON it should work straight away.

    • Hi M,

This is a server side setting and you can’t trick WhatsApp into thinking nothing happened! It will probably end up taking longer to go back to normal if you start trying different things, so it really is best to just wait if you can. But if you do manage to trick WhatsApp’s servers, we want to know about it! ;)

I saw only my firend’s last seen time, for the chats between us. For example we made a chat at 12:00 but he wrote another message(s) to somebody else at 1pm. I see last seen time as 12 pm not 1pm.

Does this mean that he blocked me in some way.

  143. Hello!

I’ve been chatting with my crush daily for years on Whatsapp and there was no issue with the ‘Last Seen’ timestamp till December 2012. I can see whenever he’s online but once he closes the app, the ‘Last Seen’ timestamp disappears. This makes it inconvenient for me as I do not wish to message him when he’s busy/sleeping so the ‘Last Seen’ timestamp is a useful indicator of the appropriate moment to text.

(I was once ticked off by a friend when I texted her at 11.30pm without checking her timestamp as her phone sounded with a notification while she was asleep. This left me disgruntled as I felt that the onus was on her to switch off her sounds if she did not want anyone, not just me, to disturb her sleep.)

Sometime in late December, a buddy whom I’d practically messaged every hour had his timestamp disappear too. He did not toggle with his timestamp. He had changed his phone from an Xperia Arc to anbiPhone 5 in November but there was no issue with the timestamp till late December. It is impossible that he has blocked me coz we message each other about everything – when we are waiting for food, about what programmes we are watching, whether we are feeling down or happy because of our relationships and basically a 24hour buddy chat till one of us sleeps.

It’s puzzling because the timestamp first disappeared from my crush’s window and next, my buddy’s. These were the two most frequent people that I’d been texting. It is as if Whatsapp is taunting me by cutting off the timestamp to those I hold dear. These are the only two people whose timestamps remain invisible when they are not online.

I’m using an iphone4, my crush has an iphone3S and my buddy is on an iphone5. Does that make a difference?

Thanks so much for your help! :)

    • Hi Sharon,

The Last Seen Timestamp disappearing once the user is out of Whatsapp is the behaviour of toggling the Last Seen Timestamp to OFF. If all of your other contacts’ Timestamps behave correctly then there is no other explanation for it. I would ask everyone to update to the latest version of Whatsapp, other than that I can’t think of anything else as there are no report issues currently. If the issue is ongoing since late December then there really is no other plausible explanation. Sorry for not being much help.

  144. Hey there,

I’m currently using an iPhone 3GS, and last night my Whatsapp timestamp stopped working, so I followed some guides online with these steps:

    1. iPhone settings > General > Date & Time > Change date to 24 hours ahead
    2. Go back to Whatsapp > Chat settings > Advanced > Turn last seen timestamp to OFF
    3. Return to iPhone settings > General > Date & Time > Change date to a FURTHER 24 hours ahead
    4. Go back to Whatsapp > Chat settings > Advanced > Turn last seen timestamp to ON
    5. Return the iPhone date back to normal / current date.

The problem is that when I did the fourth step, my Whatsapp said it was “Updating” and was stuck on that, so then after quite some time I decided to restart the app, returned to Chat settings > Advanced > Last seen, it then showed it was OFF. I tried to turn it back on and it said “Could not connect to Whatsapp service. Please try again later.”

Is anyone having similar issues and also does anyone know of a solution?

    • Reply
    • Hi mya,

Whilst some people have reported this method works. Our experience has been that it DOESN’T. The Last Seen Timestamp seems to be a server side setting, therefore tricking the app into letting you toggle back does nothing to change the server side. It causes more problems and usually means you have to wait longer than 24 hours for the Last Seen Timestamp to go back to normal. Best wait the 24 hours.

      Hope this helps.

If your contact has blocked you, you can add the contact on another phone and proceed to send a message to the contact. Please refer to our other blog post regarding Contact Blocking on Whatsapp.

However, if someone has chosen to turn off their last seen timestamp there is no known way to ‘counter’ it.
